I CC’d this reply to the X300 list which is better for your question
Dealers charge around $ 800 I believe for the option CD changer. It comes
with the covered panel that goes around the changer in the boot to give it a
factory look. the wiring is indeed all there.

Subject: [xj40] Pricing for 6 CD Changer for 1998 XJ8
I just purchased a 1998 XJ8 and would like to purchase a CD Changer. I
checked with Coventry West parts and they want $735 new and $525 used.
Anybody know of anyplace cheaper.
Also is this a hard installation. My understanding is that everything is
already wired, is that correct.

Thanks Jeff, that sounds great. Where can I get an Alpine CHMS630 and will
they fit a 1998 XJ8.

Hi Ralph.
Coincidentally I just installed the cd changer in my 95 XJ-6 this past
weekend. The manufacture of the Jag factory unit is in fact an Alpine
CHM-S620. However Alpine no longer makes that one. They upgraded the model
to a CHM-S630. It plugged right in to the “M-Bus” connector in the trunk and
worked straight out of the box. Total install time was less than 30 minutes
to screw the mounting brackets up under the rear deck in the trunk. It
took me longer to decide which CDs I wanted to listen to…
The great news is that the CD player really brought that sound system to
life. For being a factory stereo that thing really has some punch to it once
you provided it with a decent input (as opposed to FM radio or tape, which
suck).
Oh, and cost was $218 plus tax.

I’ve always heard that the system is different in the 98 and up and that you
need a specific changer.

OK, upon further research I have to apologize: As of 1998, Jag is not nearly as open with their stereo system info. Apparently it was too easy to just plug in the Alpine unit.
Of course, I doubt Jag went into the consumer electronics market in 1998, so someone aftermarket has the wiring information…
But my presumption that they had stayed with Alpine may in fact be wrong.
Now I’ll go crawl back in my hole, shut up and lick my wounds.

Go to ebay, search for chm s630. there were at least six listed there
yesterday.
