[x300] Red Headed Valet Key?

Has anyone ever come across a valet key with a red plastic head? I
saw one on a key ring on a guy’s table at a coffee house, but he
escaped before I could ask. I’m sure it was a tibbe key, so X300 or
newer?? Brandon–

Brandon,

Not sure about later cars, but my '95 came with three keys -
a normal black-headed one with growler head, a green-headed
one which looks otherwise identical to the black one (which
I presume is a valet key, it doesn’t seem to open the boot
but does doors/ignition), and a weird little key which seems
to match the others in cut but which has grooves down each
side. No idea what this little guy does, but it’s sat on the
keyring for the 7 years I’ve owned the car :-)–

Might well have been a Ford key: Some Fords do use the
Tibbe style keys/locks and red is one of the options.

As a note, Jaguar started with the Tibbe keys with the 1991
XJ40 but to the best of my knowledge, all the valet keys for
Jaguars were green.

It’s only a minor difference in the very tip of the key
between the valet and standard keys, quite easy to trim a
valet key into a full function key. Sort of only keeps the
honest guys honest but it looks good in the brochure.–

As said, ford used red keys in the early days. It was the master
key used to program the everyday keys.–
