[x300] Slow to shift into overdrive

I recently bought a '97 X300 and have noticed that the car
seems to take a while to shift into overdrive when the
engine is cold. Is this normal?

When I turn the car on in the morning, I’ll head out onto
the highway. The car shifts smoothly all the way to fourth
gear, and then stays in fourth gear for a little over a
mile. At this point, I’ll be going 70mph and will tac
2500-2600RPM.

After about a mile or so, the car will smoothly go into
overdrive and will tac 2300-2400RPM at 70mph.

Is this normal? What confuses me is that if the engine is
already warmed up, the car will shift into overdrive almost
immediately when brought up to speed (55mph +).

Thanks!–

Normal. Doesn’t shift into overdrive until transmission fluid is up
to temp.–

Thanks for your reply. Glad to hear that it’s normal. I’m
still at the point where I’m trying to pickup on all the
characteristics of the car so I’ll be better able to tell
when something really is amiss. Cheers.–

Hi
It’s not actually ‘‘overdrive’’ when that happens - it’s
already in 4th gear which is an overdrive gear. What you’re
feeling is the torque converter locking up, which as someone
has already said only happens when the transmission oil is
up to temperature.

I suspect the longer time until the converter to lockup is
one of the contributing factors in the substantially worse
fuel economy I get in winter - a far greater drop then in a
manual car.

Regards,

Dave–
