[x300] sporadic solenoid engagement

Howdee,
Would apperciate any input on a problem I am having.
Having problems I believe with the starer solenoid.
Car started cranking only after a second or two after
turning key over a few days ago. Now it won’t crank. No
click sound. Nothing.
I made sure the P light and N light are on when trying to start.
Battery is new and charged.
Pushed the car forward and backward and than at very slow
speed put it back in park again and it started. Not sure if
this is related at all to being succesfull starting the
vehicle.
Should I just change out the solenoid ?
Any ideas before on what to check before I do this ?

Thanks,
Tomas

Sounds like a starter relay going bad, try changing it.–

Or maybe the inhibit switch?

My X300 does this occasionally and the fix is ‘wiggling’ the gear
lever in the ‘P’ position.–

Brian / Mike,
Thanks for the advice.
Mike however takes the cake.
I had read in past forums that if the light in the gear the
shifter was on was lit up that this meant the inertia switch
was clicked on. This apparently is not so. The light on Park
was on and the car did not start, I wiggled the shifter and
the car cranked.
Glad this is an easy fix…
Thanks again.–

I mean inhibit switch, not inertia switch (_)–

I had this problem after I replaced a broken gear selecter cable.
Stupidly I removed the big black box from beside the gear selector
arm thinking this would give me better access to the connecter
between the gear arm and the cable. It made no difference. DON’T
REMOVE THE BLACK BOX FROM ALONGSIDE THE GEAR SELECTER. IT IS
DELICATELY SET!!!. I had a simple job of replacing the gear
selecter cable (with a friendly garage hoist) but spent days of
trial and error till I got the position of the black box in the
perfect position so that the car started 1st time without twiddling
with the park selecter so that the car thought it was in park
before it would let me turn he starter. If the cable breaks
(usually at the gearbox end) don’t mess with anything. Just change
the cable at both ends and it should be O/K. Mark the old cable
with Tippex so you can count the threads. This assumes you know how
to take the centre console to bits. I’ll cover that if needed as I
did it but finished up with 3 self tapping screws that had no where
to go.–

It is a good idea to read up on any work you will do the
transmission controls before jumping in. Many of these controls
have special tools for set up. If you don’t have the tool, you
could be hiking to work. Another area is the rotary switch, do not
take this off the tranny unless you have the setting tool.–

Tks pal,
Unfortunately I found this site AFTER I had embarked on the job.
Now I am trying to get the to think that there is NOT a door open
when I lock the car. The system bleeps to say a door is still open.
