[x300] Subwoofer possibility

I do NOT have the Harmon Kardon optional stereo package with
the sub (in my 95) but I wonder if there is a way to use the
space under the rear deck for a subwoofer - even a 6’‘X9’’
would do wonders for me, I think. Already have replaced all
other speakers and the head unit, and put in an amp, but its
hard to get the clarity at volume with only 5.25’’ speakers
planted in the doors. The crossover and amplification do
not concern me…what I’m really asking is if there is room
under the rear deck for a sub, and if so, how big? What I’m
afraid of is that the deck will require the cutting of metal
to accommodate the speaker which is obviously more
problematic. Another thought is to port in the bass from
the trunk but then there’s that pesky gas tank in the way.
Thanks for any ideas.–

I await with interest here as I’m in exactly the same
position and am interested to hear what others have done.–

what speakers/amp have you put in?
if you aren’t getting enough volume I can suggest some brands you
may not have heard of that will play A LOT louder and clearer than
any of the ‘regular’ brands
also you should easily be able to fit 6’’ speakers in, and with the
help of a small spacer and a rasp I managed to get 6.5’’ speakers in
my old X300
i was using Boston coax’s and the factory tweets running off a low
power amp and it sounded spectacular

as for subs… you can get reasonable 6x9s, but I would suggest a
10’’ sub in a sealed enclosure. you can get subs that will run in as
small a box as .5 cu ft, so they don’t take up much space at all–

but just to go back to your original question… yes you will have
a hole for a 6x9 in the parcel shelf. it will just have a metal
plate screwed over it to fill the hole, instead of having a
speaker. you will even find the sound deadening has perforations so
you can take out the bit you need. you will either need to find a
new parcel tray cover from a car with a premium sound system
though, or cut a hole and attach your own speaker cover–

Well, that all sounds about as good as could be expected. I
just didn’t want to have to chisel out sheet metal upside
down in the back seat. So good.

As for my speakers and amp - they are all Rockford Fosgate
coaxials and probably are 6’’+ because I remember having to
hack into the door panels a bit. The amp is a JBL 4X75
watts. It all sounds fine, but the Jag is an upgrade from a
hatchback car that (despite its many faults) had adequate
room for a great deal more audio firepower than the XJ6.
So, even just a 6X9 sub in the rear deck, properly amped,
could make a nice difference. Thanks for the info.

no problem

just a side note, you may find your ‘clarity’ issues are from the
stock tweets, if you have not actively disconnected them. they
won’t like having that much power when you turn it up–

Does any manufacturer actually have a 6x9 subwoofer that’s
available for aftermarket users to buy?–
