[x300] Tweeters have very low volume

I changed the door speakers with Alpine 6,5’’ SPS170A-s. I don’t
remember before if they were louder or not.
Now the level is way to low. I hold it to my ears and barley can
hear them. What can be the problem?–

Do you have the polarity correct? When you mounted these 6.56
speakers in the door, do you have adrequate clearance? Is this a
problem with all of the speakers?–

Thanks for the reply. Yes all the tweeters have the same level.
I don’t remember about the polarity, but I did all of the
connections the same.
I will check since somebody else suggested the same thing. I didn’t
know that the tweeters are so sensitive to the polarity.–

Are they the same impedance as the old ones?

I’d be sure the new ones aren’t of an incorrect impedance.
I’m not sure of the specs of these particular tweeters, but if they
both are equally low volume, I’d almost
guarantee you installed 8ohm speakers where 4ohm ones previously
existed.

I don’t remember the original speaker’s resistance but these have 4
Ohms. I will check everything out tomorrow since today I replaced
the front shocks and it’s enough for one day.–

Finally I had some time to work on the tweeters. I changed the
polarity of the mids and did not change a bit. I took off the
resistor+capacitor from the tweeters and the sound level is good
now.
I have a question about the speakers polarity. How I know which
wire is (+) and which one is (-)? I have the diagram of the
radio+speakers but it does not mention about polarity. I can
measure with a voltmeter?
Any help is appreciated.
By the way with the new front shocks the car it drives like new
again, it made a huge difference(it was wondering on some freeway
surfaces and on bumps it was bottoming out).–

By usual convention, the positive wire is normally marked with a
white line, or is ribbed.
Not always true of course.
Truth is, with a tweeter, it will make no audible difference, just
wire them both the same.
You won’t hurt anything by having it backward.
If the woofers are wired differently from each other --“out of phase”
– the bass decreases quite noticeably.

The resistor/capactor should be there to eliminate certain
freqencies so I would not leave this off. You could purchase
new ones from readio shack or online. Replace them, and this
should solve it. It is odd that they would both go bad at
once though.

If you register at a website called www.the12volt.com you can
access the radio wiring information for our cars.

there are other sites for the alarm information (which is VERY
limited.)–

I have the wiring diagram from Alldata, but it’s not specified
which one is positive or negative. I have markings like SP, SR, SK,
SO, KG, BW, BS, KP, but I don’t understand them. For example the
front left tweeter has these two markings: SP and SR. What they
mean?
If I measure with a digital voltmeter in a way I get a minus sign
and the other a positive(no sign). I could use this way the
positive and negative wires to hook up to the positive or negative
side of the speakers?–

Just do a search for wiring codes. They all abreviate to
certain colors. Haynes manuals do te same thing. The two
letters represent either a color, or a color stripe. you
should be able just to use the mutimeter yes.–

Tibor,

S = Slate (Grey)
P = Purple
R = Red
K = pinK
O = Orange
G = Green
B = Black
W = White

The first character is the main colour, whilst the second is the trace.

Thank you all for the info. I tried both ways(switching polarity)
but did not change the volume of the tweeters. I removed the
capacitor and resistor(I know that it’s not correct, but it works)
on all four tweeters and they sound great. Big difference, right
now I have eight tweeters(!), four original ones and four in the
center of the Alpine speakers.–

Tibi:

The caps and resistors are filters which keep the lower
frequencies out of the tweeters. The tweeters can’t
reproduce the lows. Forcing them to do so just results in
degradation of the highs.

Was the treble turned down when you noticed the low volume
problem? The tweeters should only reproduce treble.–

Yes, you could badly damage the tweeters if you feed them
the full frequency range. you could either try replacing the
caps with new ones or increase their value to bring the
crossover frequency down a bit, just losing the resistors
might bring them up by a dB or 2…

Regards, Bruce.–
