Hi Colin, I had a similar problem and searched and found many
places and different keys to ‘‘decode’’ VIN #'s. As I said all appear
to be different.
The one below successfully ‘‘decoded’’ my 1996 3.2ltr, X300.
Example VIN#: SAJ JFAL G4BJ 759339
Characters 1-3 SAJ = Jaguar
Character 4 J = Jaguar and D = Daimler
Character 5 F = XJ6
(Type/model) H = Sovereign or XJ12
J = XJ6 Executive
K = Daimler 6, VDP, Daimler 66
P = XJR and XJ Sport
Character 6 A = Baseline
(market) K = Japan with airbags
M = Mexico (spec) with airbags
N = Canada with airbags
X = USA (spec) with airbags
Character 7 L = 4 door std. wheelbase
(Wheelbase) M = 4 door long wheelbase
N = 4 door long wheelbase
Character 8 D = 4.0
(engine) E = 4.0 (enhanced evap. system)
F = 4.0 supercharged
G = 3.2
L = 4.0 supercharged (enhanced evap.)
S = 6.0
Character 9 3 = auto RHD
(LHD/RHD-Man/Auto) 4 = auto LHD (Left Hand Drive)
7 = manual RHD
8 = manual LHD
Character 10 B = X300 95 - 97 model year
(buildyr/location) R = built 1994 (Brazil only)

V = built 1997 (Brazil only)
Character 11 Emission system (to complicated to list - JWM words)
Characters 12-17 720000 - 746817 = 95 model year
(serial No.) 746818 - 754303 = 95 1/2 model year

I have just popped over from the XJ40 listings as my mate is very
interested in buying a stolen and recovered X300 at an auction.
He has asked me if I could give him a complete break down the
vehicle VIN number for him so he can check the car out, but I dont
have any books on the X300 (1997 XJ6)
The number is SAJJPALG3BP793383.
