[x300] X300 air-con

See my post from two days ago (air-con).
Went out in the car today and air-con worked perfectly!!Measured
temperature of high pressure pipe (smaller one) into the
firewall.Running at 25 deg.c.Measured low pressure pipe 4.9
deg.c.Air temperature at vents 5 deg.c so suspect gas charge OK.
Yesterday high pressure pipe very hot and low pressure pipe only
slightly cold (did’nt measure it).
I think the expansion valve must have been stuck (closed?).This is
a nasty job to replace. It is welded to the evaporator so the
complete unit has to be changed. This entails removal of dash etc
etc.I,m sure I’ve seen a procedure for dash removal in the archives
somewhere but cannot find it.If anyone knows this procedure I would
be grateful of a point in the right direction - just in case!!
Cost a a new unit from dealership is approx 350 (600$).
Hoping it keeps working from now on.

I suspect this is highly unlikely as expansion valves are listed as
separate items and I haven’t seen a jag where the Expansion valve
is part of the Evaporator unit.

The part nos we have listed are as follows. Your right though -
blooming expensive for what they are;

JLM11944 Evaporator 300.00
MMC6442AA Expansion Valve 165.00

As to whether it was stuck, more likely you have some muck floating
around in there. when did you say your Drier was changed? maybe the
desiccants are breaking up.

Thanks Steve,
No idea when filter/dryer was last changed.I’ve had
the car about 1 year.Might even be the original so I’ll change
it.Dealership gave me a price of about 60+VAT ,does that sound
about right?
I was interested to read that the expansion valve is
available separately.Partsman told me evaporator/expansion valve
was one unit.He also said that they had NEVER sold an
evaporator.Thanks again, Mike

Mike,

The price you were quoted is spot on. 60.00 is the list price we
are showing as well.
