[x300] X300 Driver's Door Release

Is anyone aware of, or have they experienced a ‘problem’ with their
door release?

Just recently when I pull the release (from inside) to get out, it
feels as if there is more ‘slack’ in the travel than before…also
sometimes the unlocking of the central locking seems to coincide
with the opening of the door mechanism…resulting occaisionally in
having to ‘re-pull’ the lever to get out! It just feels as if the
spring resistance to release the door to open it is
weakening…hence increased travel. (I’m not explaing this very
well am I!)

If any of you have had an XJ40 you’re probably familiar with the
feeling that the door release is giving up and will definitely have
had a non-functioning door lock at some stage! Has this problem
migrated to the X300…or is paranoia taking over??

Am I about to get locked in my own car!!

Appeciate any feedback,–

Julian,

Right behind the release that you pull on to open the door there is a little
square plastic cover. Using a small screwdriver you can remove this cover so
you can see inside. When mine had the problem you describe I could see that
the end of the cable attached to the release lever had frayed - like
suggested by Del Boy - and had almost come off. If that is your problem
there is no way around it - buy a new door release/cable and have it
installed. Doing it yourself is NOT easy - believe me I know.

I had to replace the interior door handle on our XJ8 because the lever on
the back of the handle (the part that grabs the cable) snapped.

If your problem is like mine, the spring is stretched or broken in
the door handle mechanism itself that returns the handle after
opening the door.

Does the handle move very freely or is it tight as a drum and you
need to pull further back than before to get it to unlock and open?

If its the former, you have to replace the inner door handle
assembly that attaches to the cable. Your spring is
weak/stretched, or weak/about to break. Refitting a new spring
will require a jeweler’s touch and patience, not impossible, but
time consuming if you can find a spring to work.

If its the latter, the cable is your weakest link and should be
examined as others have stated.

Good luck!

Guys,

Many thanks for all your advice…obviously its not a one off as a
few of you have suffered simialr problems!
My name and and a ‘jewelers touch’ are not usually words uttered in
the same sentance so I will be wary and try a some further
tentative investigations and hopefully stop before the whole lot
falls apart in my hands!!

Once again thanks for your feedback :-)–

In reply to a message from JHB sent Tue 16 Nov 2004:

The door handle surround is one of the easiest parts to remove in
the car that will expose the handle and that end of the door cable
where it joins the handle. You should be able to see a small
spring if you pull the handle out slightly that returns it to the
closed position. I think it would be difficult to replace, I know
I didn’t want to try! You can’t hurt anything by inspection.

Just take a tiny screwdriver, pop off the black tab gently from the
black plastic part of the inner door handle, use one small phillips
screwdriver, and then surround comes off with the (sometimes loose)
rubber seal to expose the handle/mechanism.

Cheers!

I had the same problem. The end of the cable that fits in the lock
has a small bush with a rim. This rim is torn from the bush
(rediculous) and prevents to cable from returning to the normal
position. Th elever in the lock cannot return or will be pusht
back, thus causing the reactions off the certrall locking system.
It is not possible to put an other bush on the end so you have to
replace the cable which is sold with handle. I went to the second
hand shop for a replacement cable. They had four locks with cable,
but all the bushes were torn off or damaged. The problem will
happen to every car eventualy.
It’s not very complcated to change the cable. Remove the door
covers, take off the black spring just above the cable, ease the
cable upwards and take the cable from the lock. To put the new
cable in again you’ll have to bent the end alittle into the lock,
at the same time holding the bush to the end of the cable. The
snaps into an half open eye in the lock, than slide the other end
into the holder, push the clip on(the clip prevents the cable from
coming out). Put the whole stuff together again; raedy. Be carefull
with the isolation parts.
It is not, I repeat, it is not nessasary yo take out the complete
lock, allthought your fingers shouldn’t be to thick.

Should you be locked-in, don’t panick. Open the window, push the
central lock release button and open the door from the outside.
Than close the window again and step out. Had to get out off my car
this way since the dealer didn’t have the cable on stock and I
already took it out. Very, very embarrising.

As the owner of one of the oldest X300s here, is it possible for me
to swap cables between driver and passenger doors to put off this
apparently imminent cable failure? Might be a job for a sunny
afternoon in summer? With two inches of snow on the car I’m not
going near it at the moment…–
