[x300] X300 Premium Sound System

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Reference 1995-1997 XJ6 (X300)
To anyone that has ‘been there and done that’… What is the
function of the small solid orange wire/cable, inside the grey
shielded sheath, that runs from the 6(5?) DIN grey connector at
head unit (Radio/Cassette) to pin 1 on the IC31 18 way connector at
the amplifier, in boot/trunk? My JTIS schematic illustrates a LGB
(Light Green/Black Trace) from pin 1 of IC31 to the antenna/aerial
motor, which is a contradiction. No solid color orange wire/cable
on schematic.
Not having ‘been there’, am I correct in assuming, from the
Harness/Connector illustrations in JTIS manual, that the grey
shielded cable assembly (LNC4171AB) with the 6(5?) DIN connector at
the head unit to the IC30 12 way connector at the amplifier in the
trunk/boot, is a continuous cable assembly that does not mate
through any other connectors along the route? Am I correct in
assuming that the bundled wires/cables from the IC31 18 way
amplifier connector terminate at the 18 way multilock connector
under the right rear seat?

Robert, pin 1 of IC31 is as you said the Raise/lower Antenna signal. On
my system it is Light Green/Black - it could well be used as an on/off
signal as the antenna is always raised when the head unit is switched on

  • the PA is supplied with unswitched power. The Grey shielded cable you
are talking about does go from the head unit IC34 to IC30 of the
amplifier and is the pre-amp output of the head unit driving the
amplifier. This cable is a direct run from head unit to amplifier. The
colours in this cable are red, black, green, blue and yellow. I’m not
quite sure what each wire is, although there must be a right channel
(usually red) and left channel plus signal ground(s). The speaker
outputs from IC31 do run to the connector IC22 under the seat which then
distributes them to the speakers. The distribution cabling is common to
both the standard and premium systems.

In reply to a message from Chris Copplestone sent Sun 1 Nov 2009:

Dear Chris,

Reference 1995-1997 XJ6 (X300)

Thank you for the rapid response and answers to my questions. My
grey sheathed/shielded cable assembly contains SIX solid color
wires, red, black, green blue, yellow AND orange. Red (5) and blue
(4) are outputs from head unit connector to input pins 1 & 6
respectively at amplifier connector IC 30. Output black (1) and
yellow (2) from head unit connector to input pins 2 & 7
respectively at amplifier connector IC30 . Green (3) at head unit
connector to pin 3 at IC30 is signal ground, from archive posts
that I have researched. At the amplifier, the orange wire exits the
grey sheath and is connected to pin 1 of connector IC31( all other
wires are to speakers) where the schematics illustrates the wire
should be LGB. Go figure.

I have one question more, if you will be kind enough to answer? On
a change-over from standard sound system to HK premium sound
system, is the IC1 (20 way/pin) connector at the head unit
abandoned (not used) or does it remain connected to head unit?

Regards,

Robert Harris

Robert, many thanks for filling in some missing details. I find this
orange cable odd. My cable actually came from an X308 and does not have
an orange cable. Maybe yours is a very early cable? On my system, IC31
Pin 1 is definitely Light Green/Black.

IC1 is still used on the premium sound system as there are a number of
signals required such as vehicle speed. Only the speaker output signals
are missing on the premium system. On the standard system these speaker
wires go to the connector under the rear seat for distribution.

kind regards
Chris C
