Hi Richard,

Looking at the parts diagram:

http://tinyurl.com/X300SteeringRack

The X300 rack appears to be very similar to the one on our
'93 XJ40 and identical to the one used on some of the
'94XJ40s. The rack mounts without traditional rubber
bushes. The rack bolts to the front subframe with
metal-to-metal mounting points.

However, there are rubber vibration-absorbing joints between
the rack mounting brackets and the rack body. I have never
heard that replacements were available either from Jaguar or
aftermarket sources. I do remember that at least one member
used large U-bolts beside the rack brackets to eliminate
excessive movement that develops in the rubber junctions
with age.

What exactly are your symptoms?

There is an XJR kit of split plastic spacers to take up slack in the rubber
mounting bushes with no dismantling at all - it transformed my XJ40 for the
sake of 5 minutes under the car. SPC1059 seems to be the part number. One
was sold here and there is a photo:

Easy enough to make up a pair from nylon tube or sheet, I’d imagine.-----Original Message-----

U bolts sounds crude but there was a white nylon shim (and
wire?) kit from Jag that slipped each side of the built-in
rubber mounts to reduce lateral play and firm up the
steering for sports models. It can be used to firm up a
soggy rack on touring models too, which is what I did
although I only fitted one of the shims. The built-in
X300/X308 rubber mounts are not user chamgeable AFAIK,
which leaves shimming or a rebuilt rack…

I assumed Richard was referring to the bushings inside the rack
ends.
He didn’t say which car he was working on, but the X-308 has a
shaped rubber bushing between the mount bracket and the rack. The
X-300 is different, as I recall, and uses a T shaped bushing. I bet
you could cross the dimensions and buy something from
polybushings.com ‘‘T bushes’’ section and shim side to side with
washers. I stiffened up my XJS steering a good bit by sliding
(hammering???) some flat washers beside the rubber bushings.–

Jerry,

That’s a tremendous tip! I think I will try to make up a
pair for our XJ40. From looking at the photo, I assume the
split ring ‘‘bends’’ apart to slip over the rack. A couple of
questions come to mind:

  1. Do the rings fit on the inside of each mounting bracket
or on the outer side closer to the tie rod boots?

  2. Can you estimate how thick the rings are? I may try to
find a suitable sheet of tough-but-flexible plastic.

I searched the part number SPC1059 at jaguarclassicparts.com
and several Jag parts websites, but came up with no hits. I
wonder if the seller got the part number wrong?

Thanks again for this great tip!

It was along time ago and a garage fitted them for me so my memory is hazy.
I think that, in your position, I’d crawl under it and measure the gaps to
fill. At a guess, 2-3mm thick.-----Original Message-----

Hi all, many many thanks for your help with this… The
symptoms are just generally soggy steering which makes the
car very unpleasant to drive at high speed, as you are
constantly having to ‘‘manage’’ the steering, slightest camber
changes, the act of crossing the white lines on the
motorway can be entertaining… you steer into the lane
change and the car sort of ‘‘floppops’’ over the line…
Everything else has been renewed- all ball-joints,
suspension rubbers etc etc and the tracking (all 4 wheels)
carried out by Jaguar last year. There seems to be a lot of
movement on the rack. Saw the split nylon rings on e-bay and
have ordered a pair. I will take the dimensions of these and
then turn a few more up on my lathe if these help… we have
3 Jaguar x300s in the family! I shall stick the dimensions
on here…

The car had a re-con rack fitted just before I bought

it 4 years ago but I understand that when you receive a
‘‘re-conditioned rack’’, these bushes may not have been
changed… Thing is, if these spacer rings take out all the
movement, does this expose the actual mounting screws to
more shock? I think they are only 8mm screws!!–

In reply to a message from Mechaniac sent Mon 16 Dec 2013:

Mechaniac,

I for one will be anxious for your post with the dimensions
of the split nylon rings when you receive them. With
postage to the U.S. the price is a bit of a deterrent. I
did finally find a list of XJR-S part numbers that showed
that part, but the list stated that none of those parts are
officially available from Jaguar separately. Thanks for
your willingness to share the dimensions with the rest of us!

You mention that all the suspension rubbers have been
renewed. Did that include the front subframe ‘‘Vee mounts’’
and rear pivot bushes? When those wear they allow a lot of
movement in the front subframe to which the steering rack is
attached. Replacing those and the lower control arm bushes
tightened up our front steering quite a bit, but our rebuilt
rack also has some excess movement in those mounting bracket
bushes that I’d like to eliminate.

I suspect that the purpose of those bushes is not to protect
the rack mounting screws so much as to reduce perceived
vibration and harshness in the steering wheel.

Cheers,

Don–

Hiya Don… yes, all of these bushes have been replaced, each
making a little difference every time, but I feel that these
gains are being lost through the deterioration of the rack
bushes… Believe me, the actual purchase price is a bit of a
deterrent here, (Over 35 for a couple of nylon washers!! )
and I would not pay it were I not so fed up with the way
this issue totally takes away the enjoyment of driving this
otherwise lovely car at speed… I could try and experiment
with different thicknesses etc but just thought better to
pay the money and get the correct fitting stuff to begin
with… Hopefully will be here in the next couple of days so
shall post the details as soon as I have them, fantastic to
have an opportunity to be able to contribute a little
something back to the members of this site, who in the past
have been so helpful, and have saved me that 35 and very
much more in the past because of their experience :)–

Mechaniac,

Just to be clear, I was not criticizing you for purchashing
those washers. If I had three cars they would fit, or even
two, I would count them a bargain. But the 35 plus
overseas shipping made me think twice.

Looking forward to what you learn about the bushes when they
arrive.

Your description sounds identical to excess toe-out. I’d
double check the fronts are still aligned with some toe-
in. A knock or a change of some other bush can put things
out of whack.
