Hiya Don… Finally!!! Okay, the discs appear to me made
from some sort of polythene- I thought maybe they were
nylon, but I think nylon would be to brittle as it looks
like you will have to do some bending and twisting of the
discs to get them in place. Okay, so, Thickness= 3.3 mm
(Maybe 1/8 inch sheet at 3.175mm would suffice… Outside
diameter = 83mm, Inside Diameter =58mm. Now the fiddly bit
is that there is a groove, 0.8 mm wide around the outside
diameter, it’s function is to help retain some tie-wire, the
purpose of which is to prevent the ring from spreading. I
would have thought that some patient hack-sawing would
suffice, Only cutting into the outside by a millimetre or
so. The odd thickness (3.3mm) and the groove would tend to
suggest these items are made from round bar, drilled,
grooved and parted off… Finally, the cut out as in the
picture on ebay, to allow the ring to spread, is just a
single sawcut on these, no portion missing. Anyway, I shall
see how they fit tomorrow, hopefully and let you know how we
get along.–

Hi Richard!

Thanks a million for those dimensions! Your analysis of how
the rings were manufactured sounds spot on.

They shouldn’t be too difficult to replicate. Just so I
understand, is the groove on the outer circumference
centered on the 3.3mm thickness of the ring? It would
probably be simple to form such a groove with a small
triangular file worked around the perimeter, or to set up
the Dremel routing table to do it.

Cutting the circles should be relatively simple. Maybe the
Dremel or laminate trimmer with a simple circle-cutting jig.
At 3.26’’ The outside of the ring might be close to the
inner diameter of a 3-1/2’’ hole saw, and at 2.32’’ the inner
diameter is just larger than a 2-1/4’’ hole saw…

McMaster-Carr stocks high-temp and impact-resistant
polyethelenes in sheets (I had already looked up Delrin but
now I think that would be too rigid - thanks for saving me
some money!). I have a thickness planer so I may order a
1/4’’ thick sheet and plane it down to 3.3mm. 3/16’’ would
save planing time but they don’t stock it. I may check with
other vendors.

Thanks again! Your investment may help firm up the steering
of a whole lot of Jag Saloons. Can’t wait for your report
on the results after you install them!

Cheers,

Don–

Hiya Don… yes, the groove is centered on the 3.3mm
dimension, round the outside… the 3.3 dimension was quite
tight on mine, struggled to get them in, perhaps a little
vaseline or similar would have helped. In the end, I opted to
put the front wheels up on ramps, and unbolt one steering
rack bracket while getting an assistant to turn the steering
to open up the gap on the other, fixed bracket to ease
fitting, and then repeating the operation on the other side.
In all honesty, I would have thought that 1/8 inch sheet
(3.175mm) would be adequate. I dont feel that the diameters
I have given would need to be millimeter perfect. As of yet
to get the car out for a good run on the motorway but the
high speed stability on one of our quicker local roads seems
to be very much improved- the varying cambers and dips in
the roads used to take some ‘‘managing’’ of the steering
before, and I don’t feel that the track-rods feel like they
are made from rubber anymore!! Plus, My fear of having very
harsh feeling steering doesn’t seem to be a problem. All in
all, seems like a very worthwhile addition… Cheers, Richard :)–

Outstanding! I may try making some from 1/8’’ sheet just to
see how they do. I had hoped to get it done while our son
had the XJ40 home from college, but he heads back tomorrow
so I’ll have to wait till Spring Break. Thanks again for
this terrific info and the good performance report!

Cheers,
