[x300] X308 Low Heat ...again with the pump?

Is the X308 just as plagued by the goofy heater pump issue that
the X300 was? I just ran my heat for the first time in ernest
yesterday and my blowers barely ran and only a drop of heat
cam out. I repaired the carbon brushes on my old X300 with
perfect results. Will I have to do the same on this one?
Note the A/C blows super cold and with strong air force so the
blower is not acting up…
I found the actual pump and it looks the same as the X300 but
super hard to get to since its under brake reservoir
compartment.
Any ideas? Thanks,
Dave–

Dave,
I recently had to replace a dead heater pump on my 98 XJR. Turned out
to be worn out brushes. Where did you find replacement brushes? I
picked up a used pump at a local junkyard for $75. Not too hard to
replace, remove the header tank first.

Good Luck!

In reply to a message from Dave Harvey sent Sun 7 Oct 2012:

I had to fix a leak in the hose between the heater and the
cylinder head recently, so I decided to bite the bullet and
refurbish the pump at the same time, whole job took far less
than 1 hour. There is minimal, if any coolant lost when
taking the pump out and it takes minutes to dismantle and
clean. I wanted to separate the armature but couldn’t find a
way of removing the ferrite magnet that couples to the
impeller as I could have removed and replaced the brushes
without bending the hard brass flanges at the top of the
housings, however not to be.

I used these brushes, having rubbed/ground them to size on a
sheet of crocus paper and cutting to length, I cut the
existing tails and soldered the replacements on.

It’s well worth doing as it takes very little time and the
C/C delivers heat all the time, not just when you are
thrashing along at 3000 rpm. I also sent Jim Butterworth
some photo’s I found and he kindly added them on his
website, incidentally he also has the brush dimensions in
his write up.–
