[x300] [x350] Question about engine oil drain plug location

X350 (N3) 3.5 liter engine MY 2003/2004

Hi,

Just removed the air deflector and located what I think is
the engine oil pan (but I am not sure). At the front of this
pan I see the oil filter. And at the other side I see a
drain plug/bolt with ONLY 13 mm wrench size. Is that the
correct drain plug? Seems a bit too small to me for an
engine oil drain plug!

Does anybody happen to have a picture or a link to a picture
of the engine oil pan or the drain plug? Or can anybody at
least confirm those 13 mm?

Thanks in advance for any efforts taken and best regards,

Rainer–

Hello Rainer,
Yes, it does seem a very small size for a sump plug but that
is correct at 13mm and in the front corner.
My X308 is the same.
I rarely remove the sump plug these days as I use a vacuum
extraction unit to remove the oil, saves a lot of grief
for this tired old hack ;o)
Be careful when retightening…no more than 25NM
Always replace the washer or ‘O’ ring as the case may be.

Cheers,
Maximus–

Take care not to overfill, even by a tiny amount.
Armageddon beckons if you do!

I tend to agree with Steve on this.
Knowing how sloppy some service places are, I have seen
these sumps over filled by as much as 2 litres!
The sump is fairly shallow and with a bit of spirited driving
inertia will cause oil to climb to places it shouldn’t

And which particular room of hell do we arrive in with two liters
extra of oil??? Not that I recommend it, but it sure looks to me
like there is some room down there in the oil sump and bed plate.–
