[x300] XJ8 remote key fob & key

Does anybody know a cheap source for a new key & remote key fob?
I called my local Jag dealer (Perrys) & they quoted:-
45.03 for the key
104.39 for the remote key fob
44.06 to program them

Total = 193.48 inc. VAT which I think is far too expensive.

Key fob you can buy on ebay.
Program it you can yourself - it’s very easy.
Also you can buy key on ebay - but you have to find person who
would make it for you.–

Alex, do you know how to program the key fob?
I read somewhere XJ8’s needed a portable diagnostics unit (PDU).

I just went through this process…purchasing a fob on e-bay and
programming it. It took 3 minutes to program using the method
below (which I found on this board…thanks).

It worked like a champ!

Chris

KEYLESS TRANSMITTER REPROGRAMMING

Note: The Security System RF handset transmitters can be programmed
manually in
case a Portable Diagnostic Unit (PDU) is not immediately available.

Procedure

Note : All RF handset transmitters belonging to the vehicle being
serviced must
be available. If the learning process is carried out without having
all the
transmitters present, all previous transmitter codes will be
overwritten,
rendering the missing transmitters inoperable.

Hold headlight flasher back.
Turn ignition key to position 1.
Flash headlights 4 times. Alarm will enter programming mode. This
will be
confirmed by ‘‘beeps’’ from the alarm and flashing led on gearshift.
Program each
transmitter (up to 5) by pressing the lock or unlock button on the
each
transmitter once. The alarm will ‘‘honk’’ when you press the
transmitter button.
The alarm must honk 5 times to complete the programming. Therefore,
if you are
only programming one transmitter you should operate the transmitter
5 times. If
you are programming two transmitters you will operate one
transmitter twice, and
three times on the other. For five transmitters you will operate
each
transmitter once.

I also vaguely remembered something in the '99 customer hand over
video for the
XJ8 mentioning so I just had a look and it says that if you want to
link the
remotes to a seat memory setting then you should press the memory
button on the
drivers door followed by the appropriate position then press any
key on the
remote within five seconds. I doesn’t explicitly mention this
remote to memory
position program procedure on the '98 video though it just says
that one remote
is preset to position one and one to position two.–

I’m not sure. I was able to program the car/fob to recognize the
remote as it applies to the memory seats using the procedure listed
above.

Thanks for the info Chris.

For some reason my transmitter stopped working last week. I changed
the batteries but it still did not work. All of a sudden for some
reason, it started working again.

hi, when the remote fob stops working and the new batteries do not
work try removing the circuit board and take off the rubber button
part, usually you will find that moisture has got into it, simply
clean of the damp and wipe over the contacts and re-try, be sure
not to press the buttons when the batteries are removed because
this can the erase the memory. good luck.–
