I wonder as well. To me it would seem more logical to group the xj40 and x300 as they are very similar mechanically.
I would guess this is just a historical thing. The XJ40 category was probably already there and then they added one for the “new” cars and it simply remains like that.

i found a post mentioned the x300 was used for x350 and agree would seem logic for x300 and xj40 to be together, i have an s type 1999… and lately the x350 however this might be the last of this type i buy !! , i have some problems and was looking for others who maybe experienced similar but nothing found in x300 forum.
