[xj] 1977 XJC

I’ve just bought rear seat belts. I haven’t taken the rear
seat out yet, but I guess the centre fitting holes will be
obvious. Question is where the the bottom side fittings go -
under the seat? - or do I have to remove some of the
carpeting?

Thanks in advance.

BTW I’ve just changed from a V12 XJS to the S11 4.2 and I’m
pleasantly surprised - particularly on fuel consumption -
over 22mpg driving 800 miles across Spain from the UK. It’s a
manual and performance is really not bad.–

I may be wrong as I am working from memory and I don’t spend much
time in the back seat but I think my US XJ12C has some cutouts in
the rear seat corners for the reels of the inertia lapbelts. The
78 XJ6L certainly has such cut outs. Anyway, there are bolt holes
there for mounting belts and you should find them when you pull the
rear seat bottom cushion out. Are you putting in 3 point belts
with the inertia reels on the rear window ledge? If so, you should
have no problems.

Hi Rolph,
the other mounts you seek are part of the wheel arches. From the
outside of the car you can see two large 3.5cm square bolt mounts
either side of the car. Look at where the sill seam joins up. There
should be 2 bolts threaded into them from the inside of the car (
choose the one from which the bolt comes out of the easiest!). I
seem to recall having to pull some of the vinyl that is glued in
from the inside away to get to them. I fitted 3 point inertia belts
myself last summer at the rear.

That’s a great mpg! Gives me some hope what with so much talk of
petrol costs right now. I may have another look at the tuning on
mine. The last 300 mile run I did I think I managed 18mpg and that
was just about all motorway at 80 mph although I had 3 passengers
and two large suitcases in the boot. I am pretty sure I hit 20 mpg
on a 100 mile run a few weeks earlier just doing 70mph and with
only 2 others in the car.
Good luck with your belts.
Neale.–
