[xj] 1979 XJ6L

I came home today and for no reason my taillights and parking side
marker lights except for the passenger side front do not work when
I turn the lights on but the brakelights still work and the back
turn signal lights work just in back not the side markers except
for the passenger side front. I checked the fuses and they look
good, what could it be?Buy the way my dash illumination lights quit
at the same time! Any Ideas? Is there some other fuses?Somewhere?–

Greg, I think if you open up a sidelight, you may find corrosion that makes
bulb contact iffy, so try there first, then note the bullet grounds for the
front sidelights especially, and on and on to clean & lube all connections. I
can send you info on what I did some years ago to our 79 and not a single
lighting issue since.–

Ahhhh. The previous owner must’ve skipped the 15 year fuse maintenance step
!

Remove the fuses, clean the end caps. Then clean the fuse clips and gently
squeeze them together for a firmer grip. You’ll be “good to go” for years to
come.

Tony, any sliding contacts, like spades, bullets, fuses, lamp bases and
switches whose contacts close in a sliding action, can be lubed with a light
grease. Usually manufacturers use something called “dielectric grease”, which
is often white. It’s named so because it’s a good insulator, unlike graphite
based greases. You can get it at electronics stores, such as Radio Shack, but
any light silicone or petroleum-based grease is ok. Just remember, only
contacts that have a sliding motion when mating, not contacts that just touch
face on, like common relay contacts. Battery posts & and lugs on studs, etc.
are ok with grease too, because of the high compression forces and turning
motion that usually happens when tightening. A key function for grease on
electrical connections is exclussion of moisture & air from the actual
metal-to-metal, microscopic points that actually touch each other.–

I have a low mile jaguar 1079 XJ6L with a 4.2, the transmission was
going in reverse kinda slow and now it does not go in reverse at
all, probably a band adjustment? What do I ask a transmission shop
to do, on a repair like this, They will probably say it needs a new
tranny, but I have had since new and has 80,000 original miles. OR
does any one know where and how you make this band adjustment? Any
ideas? Thanks in advance to some help.–

Greg:

It is probably a matter of age. Your info. indicates that the car is a
very early Jaguar, built just after the Battle of Hastings (AD 1066) and
the Norman invasion, so most of the parts are probably unavailable now.

To be honest it probably needs an overhaul, not replacement; the Borg
Warner really likes frequent fluid changes. The reverse gear is the
weakest element of these transmissions (BW 65).

Well. Sir Winston’s study at Chartwell was constructed prior to
the Norman invasion. Did Sir Winston motor about in a Jaguar? I
like to think so. Sadly, Sir Winston is also unavailable now.
Perhaps we will never know.–

Greg!
Your transmission is probably OK, if you did’nt mishandle
it. These are tough transmissions, I have one in my 78, and
still running fine. All I did was change the oil every 3 years.
I would go to a good transmission place and have them adjust
either the transmission lever or the bands. Its most likely
the band out of adjustment.

Greetings Jagsters. After much procrastination, I finally took my
Jag in to the tranny shop (BW66) after reverse got to the point
where it would not work unless the car was on level ground or
better. At 20 years and 137K miles, I guess I can’t complain. I’m
supposed to be picking it up tomorrow after the rebuild. The guy
is charging me right about $2,000 USD. Replacing it with a rebuilt
unit would have cost much more.
