[xj] 85 XJ6 Starting Woes

Richard Robbins <@Richard_Robbins>

Hi:
This could be something as simple as a starter, but…

The car won’t turn over, but the battery seems fine. However, the last few
times out, when the car was started after a brief stop (hardware store,
supermarket, etc.), it turned over with greater and greater difficulty. In
the latest series of start and stop errands, it wouldn’t turn over at all
after three stops, and still didn’t after sitting overnight. Could this be
something electrical? With stop and start driving, the engine, of course,
heats up after the engine is shut off; could that be doing something?
Thanks!

Richard,
Make sure that ALL the connections,
to the battery, firewall, starter, are clean and tight.
Since you say that it won’t start even after sitting overnight,
kind of eliminated the “Heat Soak” as the problem.
to Start this procedure,
disconnect and clean the Negative battery terminal, and leave it off.
next, do the Positive connection, then the firewall, and finally the starter.
When the above is completed, reconnect the Negative terminal, and start the car.
If it still doesn’t start, we can go on from there.
Most starting problems though are connector related.

Richard,
What you’ve described probably IS your starter but don’t replace it before
spending a little time checking the following:

*Security and cleanliness of battery cable terminals at the battery
*Ground connection, battery negative cable to body (loose or dirty)
*Positive connection, battery cable to firewall terminal post (loose, dirty,
or corroded)
*Connections at starter motor solenoid (loose or dirty)
*Engine-to-body ground (loose dirty)

Poor electrical connections can cause a slow-crank-after-warm-soak
condition. These are easier to correct then replacing the starter and, even
if the culprit is elsewhere, take the opportunity to clean and check these
connections just on “general principle”

One last thing: are you SURE that your battery really is in good order ? A
battery that “seems fine” may have enough power to run lights, horn, etc but
not enough to operate the starter. Have it checked !
