I had a similar problem the other day on my 83 XJ6. The car just died
after running fine. It would crank and try to start but wouldn’t. I
checked and switched out the relays for the fuel pump and still the same
symptoms. I then remembered reading a post on the list about a leaking
connection from the AFM. I checked it and sure enough, it worked its way
loose and was just hanging on the end of the AFM. I put it back on and
tightened the clamp and it fired right up and is now fine. Check out your
connections to the AFM and hopefully you’ll be back on the road

Subject: [xj] 86 Xj6 fires up and dies
While travelling the car died, I thought I had run out of fuel,
after putting more fuel in the car it still would not even fire.
Found the fuel pump faulty, replaced the fuel pump. The car will
now fire but dies straight away. If I crank the engine straight
after this there is no firing or anything, leave it for 5 - 10
minutes and it will fire up and die again on the secord or third
crank. This car up till now would start hot or cold with no more
than 3 cranks. Any suggestions
AFM bellows blew off with a bang. Stupid me got the car
towed (AAA fortunately so it cost nothing)
Bellows disconnected. Be sure to check the underside when
re-attaching, if this is the problem, it can get pinched and
not be seated properly.
Hope this fixes you problem.–

In reply to a message from Ron Reiss sent Fri 10 Feb 2006:
I don’t know about the sixes ,but I know the 12’s have an ECU
problem that fails to recognize that the engine is running and
shuts off the pump. Jumping the FP relay to ground so that the pump
runs whenever the key is on will overide this safety feature.–

Actually, no, they don’t. On the Ser III 6-cylinder cars the fuel pump
operation is independent of the ECU
