[xj] A/C Condensate Drains

Hi All,

Regarding the recent spate of blocked condensate drains (mine included),
what causes the blockage?? How difficult is it to get at the tray
itself and clean it out thoroughly??

Cheers,

Jim Downes

It is directly under the grill that has the washer jet on it. Pull off the
grill and you’re in.

The cause of the blockage, is bacteria.
Yes dear friends the little critters,
are abundant in any standing water.
Those of you that are familiar with
portable dehumidifiers, know all too well,
what I am talking about.
The gritters exude something,
that turns water into a jelly like substance,
Which is what you are poking through with the “coathangers”

Craig,
I thought that one drained out into the engine bay through those two
black ‘booty’ things?? Doesn’t the a/c heater box have one internal to
the car??

Jim,
You are correct.
There are two drains which relieve the area under the heater matrix.
they exit the car, in the area of the Trans tunnel, just behind the bell
housing.
the Air intake, between the w/w drains thru the two elbows,
with the one way valves in the end.

Jim - you’re right, of course. I was taliking about the air intake drains
into the engine compartment. The condensor drains are indeed via two tubes
into the transmission tunnel, directly above the exhaust pipes.

Confusion here. The climate control condensate tray is within the dash;
difficult to access. Craig was referring to the plenum OUTside the car,
under the chromed air grille in front of the windscreen.
