Hello All,
Last week I installed the Harley Davidson mod to the Air Flow Meter
shock mounts on my Jag (Hey, does this mean I’ve lumped it). The Harley
shock mounts appear to be more substantial than the OEM mounts and cost
only $9.33 for the three of them. You will need to have the part number
with you when you go to the store, as Harley has a variety of shock
mounts in stock. And don’t forget to ask for lockwashers and nuts or
you’ll have to make another trip like I did.
I also replaced the horns (an item I forgot to include on my recently
posted repairs list). One horn did’t work and the other could only
muster an anemic bwoop. I took them apart to clean them as has been
suggested here on the List, but found them to be clean inside with
nothing apparently wrong. So I ordered a pair of horns from Greg at
Coventry West for $24 each. The replacement horns (made in Germany)
looked the same in size and shape as the OEM(?) horns (made in France),
however they were not plug compatible (on my car, at least) and required
some extra work to install. Each old horn had a single spade lug
(positive) sitting in the clear and was case grounded, whereas the new
horns each have positive and negative spade lugs, recessed inside
individual plastic collars. The rectangular spade lug connectors
(positive) used on the wiring will not fit down into the protective
collars. I considered rounding the corners of the rectangular plugs to
make them fit, but since I still had to deal with the second spade lug
on each horn, I decided to change the connectors out. So it was off to
Radio Shack where I found spade lug connectors that would fit down into
the collars. I replaced the rectangular connectors with the Radio
Shack connectors. I then made up two three inch jumper cables with a
spade lug connector on one end and a ring connector on the other to
attach between the second spade lug (negative) on the horn and the bolt
holding the original ground wire. The horns work well and sound good,
though I don’t know how close to the original sound they are.
Now a question for the List. One of the new connectors was difficult to
install because there are two positive wires, one of them rather husky,
running to one of the horns. Do you have this seemingly extra wire on
your car? What is it’s purpose? Why is it so large?
