I’m new to both this car and car repair/maintenance in
general and I was wondering if anyone could provide me with
some simple steps to follow to change my air filter. I have
already purchased a compatible filter but just would like
help from a veteran in its installation. Thanks–

John (is that correct? We use our real names here):
Replacing the xj6 Series III filter is simplicity itself and is really
self-evident. At the front of the air filter canister you will see the
clips that hold the front portion (which includes the air intake horn)
in place. Remove this and slide it forward; the canister itself can be
removed from its mount and its connection to the air flow meter behind
it by simply loosening the screw clamp. Pull it out, remove the old
filter, clean the canister, fit the new filter, and replace everything
in the reverse order. There is really nothing complicated and nothing
you can break. Make sure that the canister is seated fully in the rubber
tube which joins it to the air flow meter, and that the clamp is
retightened properly. That’s it!
Now oil changes: almost as easy! Have you read Jagcare III yet? If not,
please access it from the main J-L webpage, at the bottom under “our XJ
books”. It will tell you much that you will want to know.

Subject: [xj] Air Filter Installation - 1986 XJ6
Hey,
I’m new to both this car and car repair/maintenance in
general and I was wondering if anyone could provide me with
some simple steps to follow to change my air filter. I have
already purchased a compatible filter but just would like
help from a veteran in its installation. Thanks
Identify the intake side of the engine and the big black can with silly
little spigot sticking out its front.
Undo the 3 finger clips at the front of the can and remove that faceplate
assembly from the can.
Remove the spigot from the faceplate and put it in your metal recycling bin
for next pickup.
Remove the small bolt in the front of the can that holds the filter via a
conical steel seal.
Pull out the old filter and replace with new.
reverse step 4.
You don’t need to reverse the other steps, because the engine sounds great
without the silly spigot.
If you want to do something really nice, go to a wrecker and find a Series
II XJ6 and remove the whole can and bracket from it. Put that on your car!
See pics 3 & 4 here…
Does your car have the two bolt holes in the fender for the SII bracket? Our
'86 did. Using the bracket reduces the load on the rubber isolators for the
AFM (flow meter).–

Just hold your right foot back a little Dave. Isn’t that what the PA State
Policeman told you?
