[xj] aj/xk engine compatability

Ithink my 85 engine was replaced with a 87 engine. Am I correct in
assumeing that this is an AJ engine ?Are the fuel eystems etc.
compatable ? any advantages or disadvantages ? Where can I find
the engine #
Thanks Mike–

Mike,
you have a 4.2 XK engine. Basically the same engine since 1967, just
improved over 20 years, from carbs to fuel injection.
Not much difference from 1985 to 1987.

one of the engine numbers will be on the driver’s side of the
engine, where the engine meets the transmission, where the oil
dipstick is.

No, this should still be a Series III XK engine (the 1987 car can be
either a Series III or a Series IV (aka xj40). The AJ6 is an entirely
different thing and it is very unlikely that anyone went to the trouble
of making this sort of switch (our Bob Higgs, however, has just such a
transplant car).
The engine number: stand at the driver’s side of the car near the
windscreen, bonnet open. Look at the rear of the engine where it mates
with the transmission housing. On the flange you should see a slash of
white paint and the engine number is stamped there (sometimes the paint
is worn away but the numbered should still be visible).

Hello Mike,

Not very likely that a conversion was made but you never
know;) In that case it would look something like this:
http://www.jag-lovers.org/snaps/snap_view.php3?id=1087735909
. On an AJ6/16 the engine# is on the flange where the PS
pump bolts to. I’m currently preparing my 4th conversion
which will result in a short wheel base Ser II powered by a
'91 XJR (N/A) engine from an XJ40 (putting out about 250bhp).

cheers,–
