[xj] Anyone running an XKE as well as their XJ6?

Oliver Marks <@Oliver_Marks>

Hello fellow lunatics,

I’m tortured by the desire to add the remnants of a 67 and a half XKE
Roadster to my collection of project cars. It’s had it’s front end
demolished in a collision so needs everything forward of the firewall
replaced.

Long term $$$$$$$'s I know. My daily driver is my SIII XJ6 which I love
dearly, and/or my 73 International Harvester Scout II which can tow the Jag
if need be :o)

How much more of a problem are XKE’s? I’ve been all over Jag-Lovers
exploring, ordered an ‘it’s so easy to restore an Etype’ style book from
Amazon, my wife’s no longer speaking to me, in other words I’m in that
wallet tingling mid life crisis mode that usually results in another
lunatic project!

Seriously though any feedback/advice from multiple owners would be
gratefully appreciated.

Thanks!===================================================

Hi Oliver,
I have never owned an E-type so I may be talking out of my hat but I have
read and heard many times over that an E-type is one of the most costly and
complex restorations projects a fellow can tackle. The body structures are
very complex and difficult to put right and there are surely thousands of
“bodged” examples out there to prove it. I’d suggest you get on the E-type
list for awhile and see what they have to say.

Running a 69 2+2 stick/air, 65 Mk10 B LHD Limo, 85 XJ6III and a 78 XJ-S…can
I be any more a loony? Drove the E as a full time driver from 7/75 thru 8/81
at which time a ratty but ran like all get outs Mk1(3.4/wires/overdrive) took
its place for 5 years. 6/81 we picked up the Mk10 (HMS service at the British
Embassy in DC 65 to 69) FORCED MYSELF to drive American and Japan stuff from
87 till 95. Did you know that an 85 Grand Wagoneer can be set up to mimic the
weight ratio of an E-type? I got back into a cat full time in 95 (85 XJ) and
I pray I will never have to drive anything else (ok…maybe an X-300 but we’ll
see)
ANYWAY>>>
If you’ve ever worked on a Series 1 XJ the E type will be a breeze. Anything
else and you’ll think your working on a 55 Ford (or Chevy)…things get
simpler the older ya get model wise. On your proposed 67 E, as long as the
tub isn’t bent at the rail heads, its almost a bolt-off-bolt-on repair and
enjoy the ride…
oh…the 69 E?..still around and being rebuilt as a Historic racer…lets
see…whats past loony?
