[xj] Bonnet Re-installation

Any tricks to getting the bonnet back where it belongs? I removed it to
simplify access to the front of the engine. Now when I bolt it all back
up it seems to have crept forward some. Far enough that the latch pins
no longer line up with the sockets. I’m a little puzzled, it doesn’t
seem like that is possible.–

Matt:

Yup, alignment is fiddly. A past
lister developed the following
method.

  1. Remove the grill.

  2. Remove the opening limit
    gadget or disable it.

  3. Slacken the bolts on the
    hinges.

  4. Adjust bonnet to it’s best
    alignment in the latched
    position.

5.With the bonnet still closed
and latched, reach in through
the grill opening and tighten
the bolts on the hinges.

  1. Open the bonnet, replace
    or discard the limit latch.

  2. Replace the grill.

  3. The latch pins may require
    tweaking.

9 They do respond to a nice
dab of grease.

Those who have mastered the
bonnet have earned the title
of ‘‘Jaguar Mechanic’’.

Me, only sorta…

Did you mark the position of the hinges prior to removal, Matt - sort of
20/20 hindsight…?

As Carl says, the alignment procedure is indeed fiddly - made worse by the
care necessary to avoid bending or locking up the latchpins in the wrong
positions - prevent release of the hood…

As an aside to Carl’s points; the gaps should be even all around, and level
with the mudguards - and there is also a certain adjustment possible on the
mudguards…
