Unfortunately it appears that “David Shield & B.J. Kroppe’s XJ6 parts
interchange guide” is not online, so I have to ask this on list:
If I want to replace my Series 2 coil, can I get a generic replacement? I
intend to take it into the parts shop tomorrow, and have them find a
replacement. I do know that mine uses a ballast resistor.

Actually, by mutual agreement, the Parts Interchange Guide has changed
admins and servers. Mr. Kroppe is out of the country on business, and he
can no longer maintain it. It now resides under my aegis, at http://216.59.24.11/guidewerks/
This is a temporary address, and it is still very much under
construction. Some of the links and functions donotwork. However, the
search function works very well, and I’m interested in getting feedback.
I will announce when it’s completed and all links are functional.

Oh, and yes, you can - though there is some thought that it will not run
as well/smoothly.

Hi all,
In regards to things to do now that I’m fiddling around in the engine bay
and have removed fuel rail, air intake, air flow meter, throttle butterfly
assembly etc etc Alex gave me the below advice.
To Alex and others I want to ask what the benefit of replacing the coil as
suggested is?
Thanks!

Staffan, with that much free space, I’d use the opportunity to relocate the
coil to the fenderwall up near the resistor pack – this means moving that and
the horn relay around a bit too.

Heat. These engines have a tremendous amount of heat soak, and items
along the water rail take a pounding. The injector wiring harness is a
good visible example of this.
I think the setup as delivered was to make engine testing easy before mounting
in the car. The Jag is one of the few cars I’ve seen with an engine-mounted
coil.–

By moving the coil and wiring away from the stock location, it should
stay cooler and have a longer life. That’s the convential wisdom at
least.
When should a coil be replaced as a matter of routine maintenance, if
ever? It occurs to me that I don’t think I’ve ever replaced my coil,
and I believe it has a date etched on it from the 1990’s.
Thanks.

Yes, in 45 years of owning cars, I’ve never had to replace a coil on any
except our SIII. There’s no reason to need to replace a coil unless it’s been
abused somehow. When Jag moved the coil from the SI’s fenderwall to the
SII/III’s engine, for manufacturing convenience, they caused it to become abused.

Jay!
That item is so forgotten in many years of service, that I
recommend replacing one after 8 years, since they might
give a problem and you would least expect it.
I talk from experience.

It’s not a wear item, Jay - and, having already a proven track record it
may last longer than a replacement…
In reply to a message from Jay sent Mon 22 Jan 2007:
Jay, the coils mounted horizontaly on the intake manifold
have a tendancy to leak their vital bodily fluids, fairly
often I have only found this by removing the coil from the
car and having a very good look at it, if there is any sign
of leaking it should be replaced, I also routinely replace
the coils if they are 8-10 years old , older than that and
they are almost certainley showing signs of
deteriation/leaking, Andrew Robson–
