[xj] Cruise Control, Boy do I feel stupid

“Doug Dwyer” <@Doug_Dwyer>

Hi Gang,
Well, never let it be said that Dwyer won’t fess up when he has been
something less than clever. Way less. Here goes…

Took a short, 220 mile road trip today and damned if the cruise control
didn’t work. I wasn’t concerned what with the wealth of repair info
available in the archives and all. Upon my return I printed off some of the
good, step-by-step diagnostic postings, grabbed my logic probe, test leads,
VOM and tube of silicone and set to work.

The details are irrelevant but I made every conceivable test of the
circuits, solenoids, control module, bellows, etc. and everything checked
out just fine. What I forgot to do was start with the basics. Only AFTER all
this testing (which, at least, was interesting and educational) did I decide
to check the vacuum supply hose from the throttle body. It was mushy and had
a two inch split. The repair, of course, took about 2 minutes. I replaced
the hose to the bellows at the same time…add another 45 seconds to the
job !

Besides being operational again I notice that the engagement is more
positive, and “increase speed” feature is more aggressive and the “resume”
is instantaneous. I’m sure the mushy hose was collapsing and progressively
getting worse as time went by.

OK. Go ahead, fire away with all your admonishments, snickers, homilies and
“Tsk Tsk Tsk’s”. I am ready and will take it like a man. A Jaguar man.

Doug,
Don’t be too hard on yourself. I have “outfoxed” myself many times.
Things like, oh, testing a circuit for 15 minutes finding it dead just like
I thought, only to find I forgot to turn on the meter! There are those who
will admit to these brain shorts and those who won’t. Everyone has them!
