[xj] description plea

Once again a brief reminder to listers to FULLY describe their cars when
asking for advice. Case in point: a 91 VDP. Well, to an American this car is
a 6 cylinder “xj40”. To a Canadian it is a 12 cylinder Series III!!!
Different animals, different answers to the same question. listers should
bear in mind that this is a VERY international list, and Jaguar marketed
different models and variants.

I received a private e-mail asking me to explain the description I used in a
recent post viz. “Federal Spec”.

My car has a metal label under the hood with the word “Federal” stamped on
it. Also, the decal on the drivers door states: “This vehicle conforms to
all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety and bumper standards in effect
on the date of manufacture”.

A better description would perhaps be: US Federal Spec. But, are there
other US specs out there and, if so, what is the difference? Any wisdom
from the list?
