[xj] door panels and maintenance - read Jagcare III

Hello all;
I am still in the process of giving my 85 Jag a much
needed maintenance / cleanup. It is amazing how much
there is to do on a car. Now I know why so many cars
go to the graveyard; the owners simply do not put
enough time and attention to maintain their
automobiles. Period. This is such a shame. The irony
is that these same people would rather spend $30,000,
$40,000 and $50,000 on a new car that will inevitably
go to the graveyard as well! So sad. Well anyway, we
know better than that! With my door panels off
[thanks to Jagcar III], I could see that my drivers
side inner portion of the door panel has suffered
tremendously from water damage. It is crumbling as a
touch it. And it is warped at the bottom , which is
obvious when the door is open. Not acceptable for an
automobile of this calibur. This is my fault because
I neglected to replace the outside window squeegee
[mine was broken up and cracked]. So I bought some
compressed board and prepared to do some surgery on
the inner door panel. I cut out and around the already
crumbled portion of the inner door panel and cut a
piece of the compressed board too fit right on top. It
overlaps the cut out area slightly and I used 3m
adhesive spray to keep it in place. I then used some
duct tape to hold it in place as well. Now the inner
door panel has a strong stucture again. No more warped
look. Next with the advice of a lister I decided to
polyurethane the inner door panel and the surgery
repair - to protect it further from water and
moisture. Finally I applied a layer of plastic to keep
water and elements from touching it. Now this is a
permanent fix. I did this for all four doors. Advice
too all; check to see if your inner door panels are in
good shape; if they are -then now is the time to
apply the polyurethane to protect them. Or at least
verify that there is a plastic cover protecting them.
If they are in bad shape, then make a plan to get them
in good shape while you still can. Otherwise be
prepared to spend $$$ to replace and re-upholster the
door panel. While you are there, lubricate the window
tracks and the lock mechanisms with graphite. :>)=====

RE: window squeegees
I found these very well priced from SC parts in England, but I see now that jagbits has them for only $12.33.
The front units are easy to replace, but the rears are more difficult, since the windows don’t go down
completely. I put off doing the rear, then one day my sister said she was taking my SIII to HER Jag place.
She decided to have the Jag shop replace the rear seal as a ‘surprise’
She got the surprise when she was charged 3 hours labor --$187.50 for the seal replacement !!
No wonder we see beautiful cars in the scrapyard when owners face charges such as these…
We are so lucky we can do most of these jobs ourselves !–
