[xj] Drag racing challenge: XJ-6 vs. Pontiac Bonneville

No contest, I’m afraid. My mother-in-law, who drives a 2000
Bonneville, and I tried to beat one another off the line at
a traffic light in Corvallis last weekend.

Sadly, the Grandmamobile walked away from me like it was
easy. Which, as it turned out, it was! She wasn’t even at
full throttle.

So after I got back to Orcas, I reduced its wind resistance
with a fresh coat of Turtle Wax, which was long overdue. I
don’t think it’s any faster, but I backed it into the front
parking spot at the office and people are slowing down to
look at it!

In reply to a message from Finn J sent Tue 18 Jul 2006:

My 2000 Buick Park Avenue (supercharged) is similarly quicker. I
hope at least the Bonneville was supercharged. Even if not, it is
hard to compete with 16 years of progress in software engine
control, as well as a higher final drive ratio.

On the other hand, the rear suspension on the GM H body pretty much
suks, while the xj6 has maybe the best ever. rest happy with your
superiority.–
