[xj] Driver's door stuck - can't open from inside or out

There has always been something wrong with the driver’s side
door, as you could open the ‘‘lock’’ with anything that you
could slip into the keyhole - like a popsicle stick.

But that would generally get the lock solenoid to throw, so
that the door would open.

Right now none of the locks are working in power mode, and I
can’t get the driver’s door to open at all, even from the
inside. The little paddle in there just won’t open all the
way.

Suggestions would be appreciated.–

Update:

I was fiddling with the passenger’s side door, and found
that once I locked that from the inside, I couldn’t open
that either.

Had to climb into the back seat, get out that door, then
open the passenger door with the key from the outside.

I think I see why the driver’s door won’t open. If, like the
passenger side, it won’t unlock from the inside, and can
only be unlocked manually from the outside, then I’m out of
luck on the drivers side, as the key has never really
engaged the driver’s side lock manually at all, and would
only trigger the solenoids to unlock the doors.

I did find my slim jim kit, in case anyone has every used
one on an XJ6 and can provide pointers.–

Dan:

You might check on David boger’s
posting.

He dissected a similar car.
Plenty of poictures.

Might just see what the
levers do and how the
Slim Jim can engage one
to unlock the car.

Old tech was a coat hanger
wire with a bit of a hook
on the end.

Good luck?

Very possessive are they not?

I got caught in the seat belt with no way to release them.
The little red button marked ‘‘press’’ fell out.

Took a bit of squirming to get ahold of it, down in
the crevice between the seat and console.

Managed it. put it back in and I got loose.

I did make an effort to loosen the belt and slip out.
Naah,. too much belly…

Dan,

The lock solenoids are activated only from the drivers lock.

The doors should lock and unlock from the inside and the
outside regardless of how they got locked or unlocked…

You could probably take the door side cover off even with
the door closed. Then you could reach the lock and open your
door.
You should check both doors… maybe start with the
passenger one, which I presume you can still open, and this
will give you also the pointers for your slim jim.

Hope that helps,

One of the checks described is that there is a fault present if the door
fails to open with the ‘flap’ in the ‘unlocked’ position, Aristides -
implying that it is normal for the door not to open with the ‘flap’ in the
locked position…

He doesn’t positively state that he unlocked the ‘flap’ - frankly; I never
tried out that particular aspect of door lock operation. However, is the
‘flap’ is in the lock position; the door will not open from the outside.

As for his problems with the driver’s door lock, he may be under a
misunderstanding. If the driver’s door unlocks it is by the door key only -
there is no solenoid/motor on the driver’s door.

You are of course right, if there is a fault with the locking - it likely
some rod faults, and the door trim must be removed to assess the problem.
But removing the inside door trim with the door closed is ‘difficult’, he
should try ‘fishing’ the door open - a car thief would do it in a sec…
