I need to repaint the insides of my fender wells due to brake fluid and battery
acid damage. I can’t tell if it wasa gloss paint or a semi-flat as
most cars made in the US use.

Alden:

Although you don’t mention a year, I think I can say pretty safely that all engine bays
were painted with the same paint as the exterior, which is gloss.

Any definitive answers from you
with pristine examples? My XJ
is black so both paints are
available in POR 15 as well as
aerosol top coats. As a
follow-up is there a leak free
battery available besides the
Optima that looks a little more
like the original equipment
battery?
Thanks again

Alden, our black 86 has what apears to hve been almost gloss – shinier than
the satin black spray I use (which is what it’ll all be eventually regardless
of OEM). On the batt, all modern auto batteries are leak free. At least I’ve
not had one leak in about 80 car-years.–

Alex,

80 car-years???

is that 8 cars * 10 years each? or is it something like dog-years?

Well Scott, I drove my Sprite every day from Aug 6th 1961 until Nov 6th 1981
(at 180,000 mi), when I got the '82 Accord I just sold last week (at 230,000
mi). Then I had 1/2 ownership of a 2002 (bad, bad) and Volvo 245 (same EFI as
Jags) for several years, now have 1/2 ownership of 2 old Jags, the 2 remaining
Hondas, plus the Sprite – oh yeah the other 82 Accord we had for a few years
before the 86 – oh, and the 1930 Model A I had for a year. I’ve lost track
of tires and batteries, just know the Sprite was the last one to have had a
leak (a Lucas batt!).–

The engine bay paint is the same gloss finish as the exterior, but has not
had the benefit of final polishing.
