[xj] Engine leaking oil?

“Jean G. Catford” <@Jean-Guy_Catford>

Recently an oil leak appered on the rear of the engine. At stop

loght it smeels oil and not clear if it is the head or valves cover or …
The head is suspected but I am not sure, is it a frequent problem with this
engine.
Thank you all.

Jean,
If the leaks seem to be originating up high, I would suspect the “half-moon”
seals at the rear of the cams covers and/or the two oil feed pipes at the
rear of the cylinder head. Replacing the half-moon seals is a cake-walk and
I’d imagine that the oil pipes might only need a little snugging up.

If the leak seems to be in the nether regions it could well be the rear main
seal. Although I’ve never replaced one on a jag I’ve heard that it is quite
the job…hard enough that you’d really have to ask yourself just how badly
you want it fixed.
