[xj] Fender Trim

I am always willing to cede to the collective knowledge of the list, so here
goes.

I know purists will hate them, but I like the chrome trim look. However,
reliable sources tell me that they will collect moisture and rust out my
wheel wells, even in this dry Texas heat. Sounds logical, although I had
them on my former '85 and had to replace a damaged one after 5 years and
didn’t note any obvious problems (but I didn’t inspect all that thoroughly).

I would like to hear testimonials, for and against, from any listers who
have personal experience with this chrome trim on their Jags. I just put
them on (screws) and will sure pull them off pronto, if I am convinced that
they will cause rusting/rotting problems down the road.

Thanks in Advance

I have them on mine. The PO said they were on there
when he purchased it 5 yrs prior. Though I have only
had the car for a few months, I did have to take them
off to put a new black trim on the edge that is
against the car due to cracking of one. I think that
is the key. The one that was missing the black rubber
trim had a little rust. The others where it was in
tact had none. They also had black silicone where
they where screwed on. This is just my novice
opinion. If installed well there is little to no
worry. This car has seen the salty road winters of MN
too. If you are going to have rust problems it’s
here.

Larry,
In my humble opinion …PUT THEM ON! I have been using chrome trim on my
fenders for almost two years now with absolutaly no problem. The chrome
fender trim I have has a black gasket type of rubber seal around them/behind
them. This helps to keep out water and moisture. I have also removed them
every six months to clean the fender area and give it a good wax and polish.
I live here in New York City and we have all kinds of weather [all 4
seasons] and I have never had a problem. Plus they look superb. I also have
a new set of Dayton wire wheels and with the chrome …the car looks like a
diamond. Nothing…I mean nothing looks better than a Jag with wires. People
go loco when they see my car.
GO FOR IT!

Flame on!
