[xj] first impressions- EBC Greenstuff Pads on 87 s3

I put the EBC greenstuff pads all the way around on Kitty
(my 87 xj6 s3) and I am very happy with the results. These
pads are very well designed, the front ones came with some
nice features. For instance, they feature a (teflon?)
backing to prevent squeeling, and a compound that is on the
surface of the pad (not even 100th of an inch thick) that
wears very quickly so that the bed in process is very easy
and only takes maybe 10 stops from a good 50mph. So the bed
in was very quick and I immediately felt and heard the
difference between the cruddy OEM pads and these babies.
Where before, I had to really stand on the pedal to even
begin to lock up the wheels, it is no big deal for the
greenstuff pads, which takes a bit of getting used to I’ll
admit. But after you get over the initial bite, you might
even find that you are in need of a fill and bleed for your
brake fluid. I didn’t even notice until I put these pads on,
as the resevoir looked full but I guess there was a little
bubble in the line. Anyway, I am very pleased with the
greenstuff pads by EBC and would HIGHLY recommend them. They
bite really well, bed in quick, are incredibly silent, and
don’t make any dust to speak of. I don’t think I’ll be
getting those new cross drilled rotors after all, as there
is no point. They are worth every penny, but they are still
pricey. The ones for the rear can be had for EXTREMELY cheap
from tirerack.com but I had to look hard for the fronts. I
got the front set for $73 with free shipping at
www.ajusa.com, even though they had to order them, I still
saved $20. I certainly hope that others find these brakepads
as wonderful as I have, and perhaps can put an end to the
really embarassing squeels that OEM pads seem to have been
causing.

Till next time,
Chris and Kitty–

I have to wonder about…no dust.
Could that mean the rotor is taking all the wear and tear?

(I would much rather replace pads - than rotors.)

Keep us posted on wear pattern of pads and rotors.–

will do. By no dust, I mean that the dust is not black and
does not get everywhere. The dust seems to not cling to
everything.
But I will check the rotors and pads every now and again,
and will certainly keep every body updated.

It’s mainly the effect of using different binding agents in the pad, IIRC. I have them on the front of the Ranger and they’re amazing both in bite and ease of keeping the wheels clean.===================================================

Interesting, but they did cost a fair amount. My experience with new pads of
the very ordinary sort on any car is that they acquire full stopping power
within a few stops, certainly in 10, so I don’t know what improvement you’re
seeing. Also, the edges of the backing plate need lubing, along with the
pins that suspend them, so it’s no great advantage for them to have Teflonned
just the backs. Squeals are unnecessary with most any pads, and I’ve never
had any because they always got lubed with hi-temp grease when put on, or when
rotated (like tires, pads do wear longer & evenly when rotated in/out).

Drilled rotors, like magnetic fuel-molecule aligners & snake oil serve a real
purpose – making $ for their sellers. :]–

Just like yellow paint?

Drilled rotors do provide some benefit, though on street cars that benefit is largely cosmetic.===================================================

I agree. OOOH my favorite performance enhancer is stickers
from brands of equipment. For instance, why pay for an
expensive set of Bilsteins or Konigs when you can get all
the same benefit from a sticker? Why use Eibach springs when
you can melt your factory ones with a torch and some oxy
acetaline and slap a sticker on your arse-ugly honda? And
why put Yokahoma’s on your car when you can get the added
traction of a lovely yellow sticker? The same goes for
hoodscoops and eight-foot-tall-rear-spoilers on your stylin
Geo Metro.

On another note, I lubed up all the parts with the blue
hitemp stuff anyhow. I am not saying the teflon does
anything, and wouldn’t car if they took it off. And most pad
mfg’s recommend some outrageous distance be traveled on the
pads before really using them, and these do not. But then
again, mfg’s do a lot of things (like say the XK enigne was
265 bhp
