Lou,
My next suggestion is to use compressed air from a shop
compressor and vacuum from a shop vacuum to clean out all the areas
around the cylinders. You might be amazed at all the debris you will
find.
I also removed all the studs and cleaned out the stud holes
using a combination of compressed air and vacuum cleaned them thoroughly
before reinstalling the studs.
When installing the new core plugs, clean the surface of the
core plugs well and make sure they are smooth. Then apply some sealant
to the surfaces of the new core plugs and core plug holes and using a
socket about the size of the inner dimension to of the new plugs tap the
new plugs into place. There are a few (3?) different sizes of the core
plugs so make sure you get a complete set of new ones when you are ready
to put them back in. The old ones should be tossed out.
Replacing the core plugs worked like a charm. I haven't had a
problem with the new core plugs in over 50K miles of driving.
I replaced the core plugs after I had installed the reworked
cylinder head but before putting the intake and exhaust manifolds on.
This way I could observe as I put the studs into place and torqued the
head down. In my case I only replaced a couple of studs and most
looked almost brand new. From the records I have the prior owner (a
physicians group in LA) had all the servicing done on schedule at the
dealership including the regular coolant changes).
Good luck.

All:
Paul was correct about removal procedure for freeze plugs.
I placed a center punch at the 9 PM position on the plug and whacked it
with a hammer. After a few hard blows, the plug began to rotate on the
12-6 axis. I grabbed a protruding edge with a locked vice-grips and
rocked it back and forth on the same axis while pulling outward.
Came out fairly easily.

P.S. Despite the fact that I had previously drained the coolant, some
came out the opening so place a pan under the work.
