[xj] Fuel return line replacement

Found a small damp patch in the rear wheel bay today. It smelt of
fuel.

Closer examination shows a leaking fuel return valve and some
perished fuel hose between the valve outlet and the tank.

Anyone replaced the rubber pipe recently? If so, is it a tank out
job or can you gain access by just removing the quarter panel?

The plastic cover came away easily enough, but although I replaced
the quarter panel last year, I don’t relish removing that and still
less the tank.–

I would suspect the fuel hoses before anything else, good
to replace all at the same time. Maybe the return valves
too.
I replaced all about 10 years ago on my 78XJ and had no fuel
issues since.

Thanks for that, Walter.

The fuel lines was definitely perished. The outer layer had all
bur disappeared at the valve end.

I did have to take the quarter panel off (oh joy!) but the pipe
connection is right at the bottom of the tank, so relatively easy
to get at.

All replaced with FI grade hose now.–

Al!
When something like that happens to me, I think its a reminder
for me to look at all the fuel hoses, like in the trunk etc.
