Nearly all of these devices will only work well at sucking money from your
wallet and giving it to the folks behind the infomercials.
IIRC, the ‘Tornado’ device is supposed to provide a swirl to the incoming
air. They show a demonstration of air passing through it and becoming a
vortex, supposedly to improve the atomization of fuel. Sounds nice, but
what happens when it hits a bend in the intake, goes through the throttle
opening, and actually flows through the intake manifold? All that swirl is
gone.
The EPA performs reviews of any product claimed to provide fuel savings or
emission reductions. They do this only upon voluntary submission by the
manufacturer. For the few products that result in any kind of fuel economy
boost, they typically had an adverse impact on emissions. (The Tornado has
not been tested.) You can read their test results here:
People who have actually bought the Tornado and then dyno tested the vehicle
have seen none of the claimed improvements.
When evaluating whether or not to buy such a product, ask yourself this: If
this simple device can result in worthwhile increases in power and/or fuel
economy, wouldn’t every car manufacturer be using them?===================================================

TT, we need your first name! Like most things that give us something for
nothing, they only make the seller $. Keep the engine tuned, the brakes from
dragging and drive with a light foot (not always easy to do :).–

Some years a ago a friend of my father, he was an environment freak, did put
a wooden block under his pedal. He was driving a 2CV. Lately my son of
three saw a 2CV, and he shouted out:“Is this a car??” his face in a
unbelievable mode.

Fuel efficiency is everyone’s goal, including mine. I have been
very frutrated by the 12-14 mpg I get running around town, but am
satisfied with the 20+ mpg I get when on the highway driving at 60-
75 mph. I am resigned to the realities of my 80 XJ6 and appreciate
the Jaguar engineering department’s decision to provide two fuel
tanks.–

I was thinking about this just last week as I was reading the verbiage on a
K&N filter box. Ithought it was interesting in how they claim part of
their increased power is from the effect of the K&N filter ‘straightening
out’ the air flow. {Rectorial Question} So makes you wonder who is right?

In any fluid flowing through a pipe, turbulence is a bad thing for
efficiency. Laminar flow is what you want. I don’t know about K&N’s
claims of ‘straightening’ the air flow, but I was always under the
impression that any gains they provided was due to the fact that they
provide less resistance to the air passing through.===================================================

What we really want is for the filter to pass only Oxygen molecules, in fact
even separate them into O + O atoms, so the engine can burn lots hotter and
develop even more power – well, for a few minutes of its brief life anyway.

None of them, Mark…
But it is a great business idea. First taking money to curl the airflow,
then more money to straighten it…
We just had the description on smothing the transfer between the
manifold and cylinder head. That’s the real McCoy!

Hey Bruce, sounds like a new product for the auto store shelves! My
neighbor’s getting a patent on an oar lock, so you & I could do as well with
the Turbo Air Splitter! Platinum blades, of course.–
