[xj] Fuel switch replacement

Can anyone tell me how to replace the dash fuel switch I
just received for my 86 jag xj6. The possibility of what I
might have to disassemble is frightening. Please help!!–

HI!

Sounds like a big job, but really isn’t ‘‘so’’ bad…

First, pull the knobs off the A/C fan and temp switches… Then
unscrew the nuts that hold the faceplace in place (behind those
knobs). They make a tool for that, but you can probably twist them
out with a screwdriver if you are carefull. Otherwise if they are
too tough to twist like that, you can make the tool out of an old
socket, just by grinding it down, leaving two small ‘‘teeth’’ on
oppisite sides to fit into the cutouts on the nuts.
Once those nuts are out of the way, pull the faceplate out just a
bit…
Right below the wood piece that covers the trip computer area,
you’ll see two screws… Take those out. Now the whole panel will
slide forward.
You can then get to the back side of that panel. You’ll see the
clips on the sides of the old switches. After you remove the wiring
harness, just depress those clips with a screwdriver, and slide the
old switch out the front side, being especially gentle so you don’t
tear up your wood…
Installation is the opposite of removal…

See, nothing to it!

All the other switches, and the trip computer, are accessed the
same way…
