[xj] FW: '82 XJ6 failed HC and CO% test

Hello, My 16 yr. old has just purchased an '82 XJ6 which has failed it’s
emissions test here in Virginia.

Everything passed except for the HC ppm, at 15mph (should be 134, was 518)
and at 25mph (should be 130, was 163); and CO% at 15mph (should be 1.24, was
5.85)

It idles @ ~800rpm very rough, then smoothes once accelerated.

It also has poor compression in one cylinder (~100 whereas the other 5
cylinders are at 140).

My first inclination was to adjust the air/fuel mixture, but I don’t want to
adjust anything if the problem is the one cylinder’s low compression.

Your thoughts?

Thanks in advance, Bob===================================================

Bob, have you looked at the plugs and their color? Since HC is high at low
speed, you might try leaning the idle mix by turning the hex screw inside the
upper left corner of the AFM – counterclockwise for lean. This (and/or the
quart of methanol in the tank) got our SII to pass at idle a while ago.–

There is much discussion on this subject in the archives. I recently had a
similiar problem, only my was just the CO. I used the cheat method of
denatured alcohol. Run one tank empty. Fill it with 4 or five gallons of
gas, pour in one gallon of denatured alcohol (look in the paint section).
Switch to this tank a couple of miles before the emissions station. After
the test, fill the tank the rest of the way up with gas. Don’t know if this
will work for the HC, but bring the CO down considerabily. The other thing
you might try is putting in a new O2 sensor. These do fail, and who knows
how old the one in your car is.

Hmmm, can’t help with emmissions but – just out of curiousity – was
the low cylinder #3 (from the rear)? Jim W. '82 & '83 XJ6s
