[xj] GM ignition module

Can someone refresh me on the part number to replace the module in the
dist. of my 87 XJ6? Mine is starting to go again and I forgot the numbers
and would like to get one without having to take it apart to identify the
unit. Off list if it will help reduce clutter.
My thanks, Max

I have purchased a new GM ignition module to replace the one that failed
suddenly and insultingly this week on my V12 VDP (this is really the only
weak part of these engines; note that it is not a part made by Jaguar or by
Lucas - and it is the same part used on GM engines in the mid/late 80’s).

These modules are available under GM or Delco part numbers but the items
are identical and are made in Singapore. The GM part number has been
revised. It was 10482820; it is now 19180771; the Delco number remains
D1906.

Similar aftermarket modules are available but the failure rate for them is
even higher! The same module is used in the 6 cylinder engines; it is a
very good idea to have a spare on hand.
Typical failure symptoms are: difficult hot starts, misfire on a hot engine,
an oscillating tachometer at idle with no corresponding engine speed
oscillation, or - as in my case - NO SYMPTOM AT ALL. It just failed to
start. And there was no injector action - because this is triggered through
this module.

Have a spare one in my glovebox!

Good to have the new numbers just in case.

In reply to a message from Dr. Gregory Andrachuk sent Tue 4 Aug 2009:

its’ probably the 12 cylinder engine with its heat and loads on all
the car’s systems. The module in my XJ-6 has been in situ for 19
years without a hitch, and obviously mine was not manufactured in
Singapore.

But this opens up the parts quality vs. corporate profit argument:
corporate profit comes first, and part quality is irrelevant, the
corporation does not even answer to customer complaints. So there
you have it from the CEO’s mouth: ‘‘GM will emerge (from the gutter)
as The Car Company of The Future, with an Emphasis on Quality and
Customer Care’’. Right, aha, if you can believe THAT.

The evidence of this false sermon is on the parts vendor’s shelves.

Thanks for the info, Gregory.

I too have been immobilised by the GM module failure, but in UK and
possibly Europe also, the authentic GM part is very hard to find.

Has anyone on this side of the Atlantic had any luck trying to
source the module, I wonder?

My previous (US based) supplier no longer posts here and I can’t
find a web based US parts house that will ship the genuine item to
UK.–

going to North Carolina in early October so I’ll get her to pick up

stock but better than nothing.

Those darn early-design modules have been an itch since the mid-70s. Back in
the day, when GM still used them, they all but flew across the parts
counter.

The new part number probably signifies a vendor and/or design change.

Well, theoretically, yes Doug.

Vauxhall was part of the GM empire until recently but AC Delco
doesn’t appear to have any presence here at all, outside of a few
specialist independant suppliers. And when you get on their
supposedly UK websites to try and order a part, you generally end
up on a very efficient but US only shipping/mail order page.–

I bet it’s the heat thing. A remote mounting with benefit of a heat
sink would probably extend the life.

And, it is unavoidable that most electronic parts will eventually
fail!

I think that MSD makes a substitute, but tht avenue is closed to

vague recollection.

I wonder what is inside the little … Oh, oh, I almost used a
