Today, the black plastic hazard switch popped loose. I removed the shroud
below the steering wheel, and can see that it fits on thru 2 pins (one on
each side of the hazard contacts housing) which engage 2 circular notches in
the black plastic switch body itself. However, I cannot get it to pop back
on, and visibility is limited with the top steering wheel shroud on.
I think I would have a better chance if I could remove the shroud above the
wheel. The ROM says that the steering wheel must be removed to get the upper
shroud off, which is attached to the switch. Is it possible to get the upper
shroud and switch off without removing the steering wheel? If I read the ROM
correctly, there is only one screw on the front of the column that hold the
direction/hazard switch and shroud in place. Is this correct?

I have taken the upper shroud off without removing the wheel. Once the lower
shroud is off, look upwards and you’ll see that there are two screws holding
the upper shroud to the bracket which holds the switches. Once these are
removed the shroud can be removed with some gentle-but-persistent (get the
idea ? ) wriggling.

Well, I found the problem with the hazard switch staying in place. A very
tiny, nearly unnoticeable piece of the plastic is broken off.
I will post a “Wanted” to the Parts Exchange, but just in case, if anyone
has a trashed turn indicator switch with a good black plastic hazard flasher
piece, let me know via e-mail if you’d care to part with that piece. It
rides on two plastic pins, one on each side of the flasher housing on the
outboard part of the indicator switch.
Meanwhile I had an estimate today on the impact damage from the other day.
The work will be done by a Porsche, MB, BMW, Jaguar type body shop. Thanks
to all for their input on possible hidden damage, and additional hidden
body/frame/mechanical damage will be carefully looked for.
