I thought I would pose this question regarding a mod I would like to
accomplish on my 87 S3. Didn’t see anything in the archives, so if it
exists, please point me to the correct search words.
I would like my fog/spot lamps to come on when my headlamps are on. The more
light the merrier in my opinion. But, I would like the headlamps to go off
and only the fog/spots to remain on when the switch is put in “Fog”
position. My thought on how to accomplish this is a simple diode behind the
switch that would allow electric current to run from the Headlamp position
to the Fog position, but not back when the switch is in the Fog position. Is
this possible (I have not pulled my Headlamp switch to see what is behind
wiring-wise) or will the switch have a problem with loading voltage on both
contacts (Headlamp and Fog) at the same time?

Dennis, depending on where you live, it may be illegal to have fogs on with
high beams – others can comment on this better. In Calif. and some other
states, it’s required that they come on only with the low beams. Your diode
thing will work, but you’ll drop at least 0.7 Volt through the diode and,
since current is likely 5 Amps, that means 5 x 0.7 Watts, so get a diode used
for power supplys that’ll be rated at 10 Amps or so, and use one for each
lamp. You may also notice the dimming effect of the 0.7 V drop in the lamps.
If you can find Gemanium diodes, their drop will be only 0.3V, but they are
more heat sensitive, so keep them out of the engine bay.
Others have probably responded on removing the stop pin in the main switch, to
allow reaching the “fog” position.
