[xj] Heated Rear Window Relay

Hi all,

One more thing.

Before I actually take apart my center dash (which I am putting off :>) to
test my switch I was wondering if any of you out there could tell me how to
test my rear window relay?

I have located the relay under the steering wheel but would like to know
how exactly to test it.

Thanx

Hi all

Can someone please help me here.
I dug under my driver’s dash and found two identical black round
relays…failure bulb and heated rear window? However, a quick peak in the
Haynes reveals the heated rear window is a square relay??? Possibly
“Pekron”? something like that, I found a square relay under the dash with
that word on it too. I know it is not the hazard/signal ones because that
one actually sounds and vibrates slightly when felt with the hazards on.
There are only two left ;> The two round ones.

Are there supposed to be two identical black round relays for two different
things in a 1986 XJ? Thanks.

If my relays are right and they all work…it must be my rear window
switch…grr.

Steve,
Take a peek in the archives. I’m quite sure this topic came up a few months
ago and Steve Gibson dutifully explained that there were a couple of
different designs of defogger relay used at various times during SerIII
production.

The defogger relay will have the following wire colors: light green,
white/black, black, and white/black/slate.

Post back if you want diag help.

My defogger/rear window heater button does not stay in when pushed. There is an audible click when it is pushed. Does this point to a button problem or a relay problem?

Thank you,

Tom

Button problem, Tom…

…the ‘hold’ for the switch is independent of the relay. This is the same sort of problem that is experienced with the fuel changeover switch - and the solution likely the same. If need be; a piece of cardboard inserted at the side of the switch will hold it…:slight_smile:

Thanks Frank. Cardboard solution might be the go given the very limited use it gets!

It’s the access to the switches for replacement/repair which makes cardboard attractive in either case, Tom - if it’s only the switch ‘hold’ that is the problem…:slight_smile:

Here’s a wiring diagram

and here’s the locations, but I think you’ve already found the locations

Very handy Grounding points :smiley:

Wire Color Legend
WK = White/Pink
LG = Light/Green
WBS=White/Black/Gray (or Slate)
WB = White/Black
B = Black

Other weird stuff
CP9 = Pin & Socket Connection which is under the console :neutral_face:
Fuse #5 @ 35 amps

Presuming that I’m reading this correctly…

  1. I’d bust out my multi-meter and start at the fuse which appears to be #5 I’d start with voltage. if that’s good, then check to see what amperage is getting to the delay unit.
  2. With the switch pressed, check for voltage and amperage out of terminal 4 on the delay unit. If there’s voltage and amps are good then check from at the rear window. See #4
  3. If the voltage / amperage is weak or doesn’t check out, then check grounds (I’d use an ohm meter), particularly G13 left side under the dash. check in and out of the switch to ensure there is good contact out of the switch.
  4. If voltage and amperage checks out at the relay.
    I’ve made a really long lead, and check voltage and amperage at the window heater from the delay unit. if that checks out, then check the ground for the heater unit.

As we all know grounding on these older cats, are problematic.

Hope this helps.
