[xj] heater series3

Hi all Am I right in saying the heater will still work without
fans and switch to off. Governed by the temp control setting using
airflow only. This is on the later series 3 system.Den–

Dennis:

NO.

(Well, you liked my last definitive answer!). The Mark III system in your
car, while having some operational differences from the Mark II unit in cars
up to and including 1987 (but the 87 V12 had the Mark III - confusing!), it
still works the same way when the right hand knob is in the OFF position -
in other words, it does not work. There is NO airflow into the cabin with
the system OFF.

But if you have done the “Gardner” modification very popular with Jag-lovers
about 10 years ago, then you will permit the fresh air solenoid to be
separately controlled. In that case, then the system either heats the
incoming ram air, or it does not. But the temperature of the air is governed
by the heater flap positions in place when the system was last turned off.

The modification on the Mark III system is done what differently, but the
principle is the same.

There, now don’t you prefer my one word answers?

Dennis:
If you have the Gardner modification done which permits fresh air to enter
the cabin with the system OFF, then you WILL get heat, but as I said
earlier, only in the amount permitted by the flap settings in place when the
system was last in use. If you want full heat without the fan, then turn the
system ON, set it to full heat, allow it to stabilise for a minute, then
turn it off. The ram air now entering the cabin will be at full heat.
But the centre vent will not open ever unless the climate control system is
ON and calling for refrigerated air. If it does not open under these
conditions then open the bonnet, go to the right side (driver’s side in your
case) and on the bulkhead/firewall, down low, inward of the brake booster on
your RHD car, you will find two vacuum ports: there should obviously be two
vacuum lines connected there. On of these controls the centre vent. I had
one instance of one of these lines coming loose, and the centre vent would
not open; once properly attached, correct operation of the centre vent
resumed.
