[xj] Holes in new head gasket

I am ready to put a new head gasket on my 90 xj40 Sovereign. I have
noticed that the coolant holes in the new gasket are small round holes
and the block and head holes are larger and triangular. Should I cut
larger holes in the new gasket or leave them as they are? Shawn===================================================

Shawn,

You should address this to modern@jag-lovers.org . That’s the correct list
for your XJ-40.

In answer to your question, the holes should match up with your old one for
a quick check.

If you have to make holes bigger or don’t have enough, it’s most likely the
wrong gasket.

Cheers,

Shawn,
It sounds as if you have the right gasket. If you look closely at the old
gasket you will notice that the triangular holes in the engine have pressed
a pattern into the gasket around the round holes. Just remember to replace
the head bolts too. They are torque-to-yield bolts that stretch when
properly torqued & should always be replaced after removal.
Torque is 45 ft.lbs then go back through the sequence & tighten each bolt in
turn an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).

WOW!!! I don’t know what is wrong, but this is the first time I have
replied to a reply to a message 20 minutes before I received the original
message! Sound confusing? You should be on this side of the monitor! If you
can’t find my post, let me know & I will resend to you. The gasket is right
& I sent more info for you to use.
