Hiya,
Thanks for that. I will have a look at it in the morning to
see how the resistances pan out. I take it from that that hitting
the thing with a hammer would have been likely to stuff it
(mechanic said it wouldnt, but I really dont believe him). The car
is just sitting turning over when I try to turn it on but never
actually catching and coming to life, does it sound like I am on
the right track with the coil or is it more likely to be something
else that has been disturbed during his ham-fisted fiddling that is
causing the problem?

A hammer to the coil is as useful as a crowbar to a wristwatch, Alistair

Two plain white wires (rather old ivory…) go to the coil pos. (Oone
carries 12V from the ign key and one feeds 12V to the amplifier). Three
bi-colored ones go to the coil neg. (One goes to the amp, one to the ECU
and one to the tacho).

To test the coil disconnect all coil neg wires. Disconnect coil center
cable from the distributor and place the end 1/2" from a good ground.
Turn key on and verify 12V at either coil contacts. Take a short jumper
wire and momentarily short coil neg to ground. Each time you disconnect
the jumperwire you should get a strong blue spark from the coil center
lead.

With 12V present and nothing - coil dead. If good and consistent
sparking the fault is not in the coil…
