[xj] Installation of Tappet Guides

Recently blew a head gasket on my 86 XJ6. After removing the head (what a job

  • email me if you want details) I discovered that the tappet guides on the
exhaust side were damaged - head did not have the stake down kit installed.
Ordered new guides, took them to machine shop. Machine shop says the guides
are .015 inches too large to fit in the head. Appears there is only one size
of tappet guide available. Question for the group - are the tappet guides a
very tight press fit or is there some special procedure for installation. Any
    help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Bob, you asked

the tappet guides are a tight fit. It was done by a specialised company here in
Switzerland on my 86 SIII Sovereign, I think it involves freezing the head and
chilling the guides or the other way around. The guides were also “knurled”
(not sure if it’s the exact technical term: it’s a bit like the lattice of grooves on
some tool metal handles) and Loctited in place.

Heat the Head, cool the guides. It makes the guide hole larger and the
guide smaller. When everything returns to “normal” temps, the guides are
“locked” in place.-----Original Message-----
