[xj] Intermittent start problem

@JIm_Edson” <@JIm_Edson>

My Series 2 XJ6 has recently been difficult to start on a couple of
occasions.
The engine would not turn over but a kind of brief “thunk” noise can be
heard.
After 3 or 4 attempts like this it turns over and starts.

I am thinking of getting the 1 year old battery checked first. What else
is a likely cause?

Regards

I had a similiar problem on a car of mine and it was
due to a loosening connection at the starter. After I
tightened up the bolt holding the cable to the
starter, I didn’t have any more problems.

JIM,
Off the cuff it’s sounds like an almost-dead starter or (more likely) loose
connection at starter, battery, or firewall mounted terminal posts.
